Vanilla Buttercream
Vanilla buttercream is a smooth, thick frosting made with butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla, creating texture that melts in your mouth. Its delicate sweetness and creamy consistency make it perfect for frosting cakes, cupcakes, and other baked treats.
Equipment
- electric hand mixer / stand mixer
- mixing bowl
Ingredients
- 6 cups confectionery sugar
- 2 cups unsalted butter room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat unsalted butter with a mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).
- Gradually add confectionery sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low until incorporated, then increasing speed to medium.
- Mix in vanilla extract, salt and tablespoon heavy cream, beating until well combined. Be sure to scrape down the sides.
- Adjust consistency if too thick, add more cream 1 tablespoon at a time; if too thin, add more powdered sugar until desired texture is reached.
- Beat on high for 1–2 minutes for extra fluffiness, then spread or pipe onto your cake or cupcakes.
Notes
- This is plenty of frosting for anything you are working on and can be colored easily.
- With any extra icing it can be store in the freezer for up to three months, I keep mine in a new piping bag and put it in a freezer bag for extra protection, plus add a date.
- While this can be thick you can make it thinner by simply add more heavy cream to loosen it up.
- To keep the confectionery sugar from coming out of the stand mixer in a cloud put a kitchen towel over top while it is being mixed.
